How to Make a Slat Wall Feature in Your Home

How to Make a Slat Wall Feature in Your Home

Is there a room in your home that feels a little blah? You know the one. You're ready for a change, too. If you’ve decided to install a wood slat feature wall, but you don’t know where to start, this blog is for you!

There are two basic options for creating a wood slat feature wall: DIY or pre-made panels. Each has advantages and drawbacks, but this post walks you through the DIY version to bring your vision to life. If you’re not ready to tackle a full-DIY wall, read our guide to installing wood slat wall panels.

Still Deciding Between DIY or Pre-Made Slat Wall Panels?

Pre-built wall panels are the quicker, less labor-intensive wood slat feature wall option. This option uses ready-made panels that save time on measuring, cutting, sanding, and finishing. They’re perfect if you’re short on time or prefer a straightforward installation.

Premium wood slat wall panels from J Thomas Home are expertly finished to achieve a smooth, uniform stain color while preserving the natural wood grain texture. The perfectly spaced slats are enhanced with Grade A acoustic backing material for enhanced acoustics. Starting later this fall, these beautiful panels can be delivered to your doorstep within 2-3 business days.

Plan Your Project

Measure the wall's height and width, select the type of wood to use, and decide on slat spacing. We recommend ¼ to ½ inch between each slat for a modern, sleek look. You can use this calculator to help configure the layout of your wall. Knowing these details helps determine how much wood you need to buy.

Your next consideration is whether to paint the wall, stain it, combine the two, or leave the wood natural. This finishing touch will set the vibe of the whole space.

Gather Materials

  • Wood slats (purchase 10% more than needed to account for mistakes)
  • Miter saw
  • Tape measure and pencil
  • Level
  • Nail gun and nails
  • Liquid nails
  • Wood filler
  • Sandpaper – 220 grit
  • Stain or paint and brushes/rollers

Prep the Wall

Clean the wall of dust or debris and remove any existing nails or screws. Patch holes with spackle, and apply a coat of paint that complements the overall look you’re trying to achieve.

Prep the Wood Slats

Cut the slats to fit the height of your wall and notch the wood to accommodate outlets and switches. Sand the slats with 220-grit sandpaper to remove splinters and smooth the slat surface. If you’re staining or painting the slats, now is the time to do it.

Install the Wood Slats

Pick one corner of the room to begin installing slats. Use the level to ensure the slat is straight, and lightly mark where the slat will go. Apply liquid nails to the back of the slat, line it up on the wall, and secure the slat with a couple of finish nails. Continue this process along the entire wall, ensuring each slat is straight and evenly spaced.

Finishing Touches

Fill visible nail holes with wood filler and lightly sand them smooth once dry. To ensure a flawless finish, painted or stained slats will need to be touched up in these areas. Once complete, step back and admire your work.

Creating the perfect slat feature wall requires time and effort, but the results are worth it. You’ll end up with a stunning custom wall that reflects your style, plus the satisfaction of knowing you built it yourself.
