How to Install Wood Slat Wall Panels: A Step-by-Step Guide

If you’re looking for a beginner DIY project to transform a room in your home quickly, wood slat wall panels are an excellent option. They pack a punch by adding subtle texture and character to the space that’s modern and versatile.

So if you’re itching to enhance a room in your home with wood paneling, follow our comprehensive guide for a seamless installation process.

Prepare to Install the Wood Slat Wall Panels

Before diving directly into the installation process, gather your tools and materials. You’ll need:

  • Wood slat wall panels
  • Slat Wall End Pieces to finish the look (link coming soon!)
  • Measuring tape and pencil
  • Level
  • Construction glue
  • Drill and black screws
  • Safety Glasses
  • Table Saw/Jig Saw/Miter Saw (if panels need trimming)
  • Stud finder (optional)

Step 1: Plan and Measure

Measure the wall where you want to install the panels. Note any outlets, switches, or other obstacles that must be worked around when hanging them.

Step 2: Locate the Wall Studs

Use a stud finder (or one of these less tech-y techniques) to locate the studs and lightly mark their location on the wall with the pencil. Securing the panels to at least one stud with screws will ensure stability and durability.

Step 3: Cut Panels (if necessary)

Some cutting and trimming will be required to accommodate outlets and other obstacles. It is very important to cut before applying adhesive or adding screws. Double-check your measurements found in Step 1 and make the necessary cuts. Unsure what kind of saw will work best to get the job done? Check out this guide for directions toward the best type of saw to use. And don’t forget to put on your safety glasses!

Step 4: Begin Installation

Start from one corner of the wall and place the first panel against it to ensure it aligns with your layout plan. Use a level to make sure it’s straight, then lightly mark where the screws will go into the wall. Aim to hit 1-2 studs per panel.

Step 5: Secure Panels

Apply construction glue to the back of the panel. Make a square around the entire outer edges, plus add a generous amount throughout the middle, making an “X” for maximum hold. Secure the panels using screws. Countersink them slightly below the panel surface.

Step 6: Continue Installing Additional Panels

Fit the next panel snugly against the first. Repeat the leveling, marking, gluing, and securing with screws process for each panel. It is important to check the alignment periodically and ensure the panels fit securely around any outlets, switches, and other obstacles.

Step 7: Allow Glue Time to Dry

Allow the construction glue to dry before proceeding to the next step. Twenty-four hours is generally long enough, but double-check the instructions provided with your glue.

Step 8: Final Inspection

Once all panels have been installed and finished to your liking, inspect each panel for loose screws and other imperfections. Make the needed touch-ups to achieve a completed look.

Enjoy Your New Space!

This project will make both newbies and seasoned DIYers feel accomplished, so stand back and admire your handiwork! All that careful pre-work and attention to detail have come together to create a brand new space. All that’s left to do is enjoy!
